We should know more about these editions and what they cost tomorrow. Things like Smart Delivery were supposed to make this situation easy for consumers, but it’s clear that some companies see an opportunity being left on the table, and they’re taking it. It does seem like players will have a choice to make soon enough here, whether to buy the more expensive edition at launch so they can play across generations, or wait on it for when the next gen systems are out and the new version is sold by itself. It’s not clear how much better say, PS5 Cold War would look and play compared to PS4 Cold War, and raises questions about potential backward compatibility, as in, can PS5 definitely run PS4 Cold War if need be? If so, what sort of native improvements might that give it? Or would Activision deliberately hold those back for a new version? It’s an annoyance for players who have seen other big games and companies offer free next-gen upgrades, from all first party Microsoft games to large third party titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. (Update: Another leak says the release date is November 13 which seems like it should be.very close to next-gen launch indeed, so we’ll see how that goes) If the Standard Edition is $60, the Cross-Gen Edition could be $70 or potentially even $80, depending on how much Activision wants to push it. We also do not have a release date for Black Ops Cold War, but it stands to reason that it will purposefully debut before PS5 and Xbox Series X come out, which would force players to either wait to buy the next gen edition by itself when it comes out, or spring for the Cross-Gen Edition at launch.
